Episode 6

“We need to take him to the hospital. Please we have to go right away” she added seriously, looking at Frank who nodded with a serious face.

“okay are we taking him to Owerri?” he asked nervously.

“no we have a hospital we have been visiting since last year at the local government headquarters” she answered, standing with the sick Child in her arms. Frank quickly signalled at me to open my car door with a pleading look. I had no choice than to comply.
The woman slowly got into my car with her child while Joy rushed out from the house to join us. Together we all headed towards our local government headquarters which really wasn’t very far away….

Fifteen minutes later, we were at a private hospital, opposite the Local government Secretariat. Luckily We were quickly attended to by the nurses before Joy’s mother left us at the reception hall to see the doctor.
As soon as we were alone, Frank dragged his girlfriend out of the reception hall in a very rude manner, forcing me to curiously follow them, in order to prevent my friend from misbehaving. Of course i knew he was still boiling with anger over the events of the previous day.

“how could you do this to me?. You were expecting a new suitor yesterday and you never told me about it??. Perhaps it was the reason you have been avoiding me lately. Tell me, how long have you known the guy and how long have you been sleeping with him?” he asked furiously, holding her wrist very strongly. She screamed with disgust, shaking her at the same time.

“Frank why do always derive joy in hurting me??. You didn’t even respect the fact that we are in the hospital. I just can’t take it, you don’t consider my feelings before pouring out anything to me” she breathed with a coloured face.

“i feel like slapping you right now but we are in the hospital and i can’t do that. You w—e” he cursed effortlessly while i gasped with shock. Joy instantly pushed him, breaking free from his grasp.

“you are fond of cursing and making irrational comments. You never cared to know how things happened yesterday before concluding. Fine it’s cool, just leave me alone” she screamed at him, turned and ran back into the hospital reception hall while i instantly faced my friend with a look of disbelief.

“don’t look at me that way because you have no clue what’s going on here” Frank kind of shouted at me before going after his girl.
I slowly followed after some minutes, running into them at the reception hall with Joy’s mother who looked totally worried. I slowly drew close to listen as she addressed Frank.

“my little boy is going to be staying here for a while. The doctor said it’s very necessary, so that his life could be saved but the issue right now is money. They want me to make a deposit of five thousand Naira. I have already paid two thousand Naira for the bl0*d and urine test they are about to perform” she complained to Frank who really could have used the time spent in fighting with his girl to figure out something to do, since he already knew he had a big role to play that morning and had no money on him, but i guess his emotions took control of him or something…..
I simply folded my hands and watched on…

“Don’t worry, I’ll try my best to help out” Frank promised halfheartedly while the poor woman looked at him with expectation. I simply looked on, not saying a word. Frank slowly looked at me.

“please do you have at least two thousand Naira on you?” he asked pleadingly. I shrugged, and said no, Joy instantly cut in, saving the embarrassing scene.

“mum i have two thousand five hundred Naira with me. You can have it all” she said to her mother, fetching out three currency notes from her handbag. The poor woman collected the money, smiled at her daughter, gave Frank a strange look before heading to meet the nurses attending to her sick child.

Frank really felt embarrassed for being unable to help his future mother in law. Of course who wouldn’t be.
“so what now?” Joy asked him but all he did was just to shrug.

“i guess i will be leaving with Val but i will be back before the end of the day to bring at least three thousand Naira for your mum. I just made her a promise” he murmured with resignation. Joy smiled, drew close and held his hand.

“i love you and that’s all that matters. So please stop thinking bad of me, or questioning my feelings over a little thing. Yea i know that i’m from a poor family and sometimes, situation of things do take a toll on my behaviour but that shouldn’t make you judge me wrongly. We have been together for many years and i’m with you because i believe you have a great future, moreover i do love you” she said sweetly to him without caring that i was listening. Frank smiled for the first time and looked at her with bright eyes.

“don’t worry, i will do anything to make money for our happiness” he promised her…..

Ten minutes later, Frank and i were in my car, heading back to Owerri.
The events of the past few minutes, really made me to somehow understand Joy’s position. Of course as the first daughter of the family, a lot of pressure were on her to marry someone who would help the family and Frank was still far away from that category…

“you know you kind of embarrassed me before Joy’s mother. You mean you don’t have at least two thousand Naira with you?” Frank suddenly asked with a drawn face. I scoffed and threw a quick glance at him.

“you made the mistake of rushing over to your girl’s house for a fight with no money in your pocket” i threw back at him. He breathed deeply and sighed.

“now you see the main reason i need a job or for you to pull off that deal with your woman. I mean Tessy, because i need money badly and i can’t just figure out a way out of the poverty biting me” he hissed. I kept quiet and drove on, not saying a word…

Frank finally borrowed Three thousand naira from me when we got to Owerri and headed back to the village. I spent the rest of the day writing my stories……

9am, the next day, I got a very surprising phone call from Tessy. We haven’t spoken to each other for a long time and she was the last person i was expecting her call that morning.

“hi Val, guess what?, i’m in front of your apartment?” she said with her usual lively tone as soon as i answered her call.

“which apartment?” i asked with disbelief.

“quit the question and come out towards the gate. You will see me” she said convincingly.

“noooo” i breathed and headed out of my apartment.

“are you surprised?” she asked, laughed and hung up…

On getting to the gate, I saw Tessy standing with her usual charming smile, dressed in a matching red outfit. She looked undoubtedly stunning.
I simply froze as i stared at her with shock and surprise, too many questions ran through my head that moment..

“Tessy!” I exclaimed with disbelief, staring at her with eyes wide open. She smiled and drew closer to me.

“what on earth are you doing here?. My God” i asked with a smile.

“To see you of course” she replied intelligently. I breathed deeply, a bit confused on what next to do.

“aren’t you going to take me to your apartment or are we going to stand here and chat?” she asked softly, her eyes all over me.

“oh yes of course, let’s go” i replied quickly, she rolled her eyes, scoffed.

“oh Val, Val, Val. You still haven’t changed” she breathed as she followed me to my apartment………………

On getting to my room, she demanded for a cup of cold water which i offered her before we settled down for a long talk.

“seriously i never knew you were in town. According to what you told my friend Frank, i wasn’t expecting to see you till weekend” i confessed while she laughed and licked her lips.

“yea you are right but i have been in town for almost a week. I bought a small house at world bank, seven days ago, which really was the main reason i came in. But finally i’m done with the renovation and everything, though it’s a clean small house which the owner never wanted to sell, but needed the money badly and so had to put it up for sale. My friend informed me, sent me the pictures and i jumped on it” she explained slowly as if i cared to know.

“hmmm i can’t imagine the amount of money in your bank accounts. You are just spending money like a politician. How about the other building project at New Owerri?” i asked curiously.

“it’s still on going dear, but i’m not rushing it” she replied, threw a quick glance round the room before leaving her eyes on me. I breathed deeply and looked down.

“You can’t imagine how much i missed you. I have everything but love. Anyway my relationship with you really thought me that you can’t buy love with money” she said softly,. I shrugged, feeling uneasy.

“so tell me, what’s your plan now that you are done with Nysc?” she asked curiously. I shrugged once again, saying nothing.

“I can help you set up yourself. I can help you out with a business idea and finance to back it up and make you hundred times richer than i’m” she suddenly proposed. I looked up at her with a curious expression.

“You know, when my husband and I divorced, i was left with money which could have finished had i not taken the risk to invest heavily and accept help from friends. Here i’m, offering you that same gesture, my friends offered me. I know you have money, we can even work together to set up a multi million business here in Owerri” she proposed effortlessly. I looked at her, unable to mutter a word.

Her offer really was cool and tempting, but coming from a lady like her. I couldn’t help but draw back with suspicion, moreover it wasn’t the first time she was proposing something juicy to me…

EPISODE 9

“so how about your kids?. It’s been a while i last saw them” i suddenly asked, tactically changing the topic because i wasn’t ready to debate on business issues with her, but my question kind of caught Tessy off guard. Her face quickly changed as if i asked something horrible.

“oh Val, c’mon do you care?” she asked, standing swiftly. I smiled and nodded.

“of course you know i so much care about your kids. They are like family to me” i replied, studying her tensed mood curiously. It was obvious she wasn’t comfortable talking about her children with me which was very weird because she had always wanted me to play a more bigger role in their lives.

“oh just shut up Val, i rather not talk about them” she murmured, backing me. I quickly rose up with concern, drew close and held her shoulders.

“i beg of you, what’s wrong?, don’t tell me something bad happened to them?” i asked curiously. She turned and faced me, her eyes wet with tears.
I swallowed hard with shock, not knowing what to imagine or expect. It was very hard seeing Tessy all emotional and shaken.
Slowly i lifted my hand to her face, feeling it’s warmth. I trembled and withdrew my hand, leaving my eyes on her.

“Val, my ex husband is about taking them away from me forever. Once school closes by July, they will be leaving with their father to who knows where. I just don’t know what to do and i can’t fight it” she poured out, tears dropping from her eyes. I breathed hard, clueless on the right words to say.

“he accused me of being a bad influence to my children. He said i hardly stay at home to care for them and that i always bring men home before their eyes. I don’t know who fed him such information but he suddenly showed up last month very serious to take the kids. I tried my best to fight off his accusations but everybody sided with him. Moreover our culture equally didn’t help my case. My family also wasn’t of much help. Tell me do i look like a bad mother?. My kids mean a lot to me. I can’t imagine my life without them but i guess i now have no choice than to live all alone with my money. Tell me of what use is the money if i can’t spend it on my children??, and you know if they should grow up without my care, their father will definitely poison their feelings towards me. Seriously Val, forget my bold pretty face, great clothes and money. I’m nothing. I’m empty inside. I never had the opportunity of marrying from my heart. Then I lost love, lost you and now about to lose my kids. How much more will i sacrifice in this life??” she poured out like a woman who lost everything, shaking me with the strong words that came out of her mouth.
I never had seen her in such a pitiable state, so shaken and coloured up. I just didn’t know what to do.

All i managed to eventually do was just to hug her, hold her strongly in my arms and plead to her to calm down from the very bottom of my soul….

Episode 10

“Tessy just calm down, i believe everything happens for a purpose. Simply look towards the positive side of it” I murmured breathlessly, not knowing how to bring her out of the depression she was quickly slipping into.

“there is no way i can see things positively my dear. C’mon don’t try treating me like a baby” she breathed, raising her face to meet my gaze. I gently wiped her tears with my hand, silently praying for the emotional scene to end.

“Thank you” She muttered with great pain, her eyes still on me as if she was searching for something well hidden in my face. I blinked and looked away, a bit uncomfortable with her gaze.

“I just wish there is something i can do to help” i murmured with resignation, hugging her once again.

“Val i’m so grateful for the sudden show of care. I haven’t felt this loved in a long time. Maybe we should go out to catch some fresh air and fun. I haven’t eaten anything today and i’m so very hungry” she said softly, breaking free from my hold and trying her best to appear strong once again. I nodded and accepted.

Twenty minutes later, we arrived at a small restaurant at the heart of world bank estate. We had a quick meal before heading to her building site where she did a brief supervision before taking me to her new house….

“Finally we are home” she smiled sweetly as we walked into the sitting room. I looked around, nodding with satisfaction.

“so what do you have to say about the house?” she asked curiously while i smiled and shrugged.

“Your house is just superb, it’s small but well shaped and beautiful. I wish the house is mine, seriously” i answered. She laughed, shook her head and stared at me intently.

“thanks so much for giving me all your time today. You don’t know how happy you made me with it” she said seriously, drawing close to me in a romantic fashion. She held my shoulders, and brought her lips closer to mine as if she was about kissing me.

“i hope you have totally forgiven me over the little fights we had in the past?” she asked quietly. I nodded instantly, breathing deeply.

“what happened between us in the past is now a thing of the past. I’m equally sorry for taking you for a ride” i apologized seriously. She rolled her eyes and shook her head.

“i hope when i finally lose my children, you will be there for me?” she asked curiously.

“of course, i will always be by your side” i promised.

“hold my heart and promise me you will be by my side” She demanded. I instantly swallowed hard, resting my eyes on her chest, and hesitating to go on with her request. She quickly drew back a little, grabbed my right hand and placed it on her chest, repeating her demand once again.

“promise me” she begged.

“i swear that i will always be by your side as a friend” i vowed softly. She breathed deeply and smiled at me with bright eyes filled with hope.

“Thank you Val. Thank you” she muttered passionately, brought her lips forward and pecked me….
