Charlo Greene went viral in 2014 when she resigned while presenting a piece about cannabis legalisation in Alaska for KTVA.

But away from the spotlight, an ongoing legal battle has remained relatively unreported despite the fact it could see the weed advocate jailed for up to 54 years.

The charges relate to the Alaska Cannabis Club, which Greene created six months before the state voted to legalise cannabis for recreational use.

After a series of undercover operations and raids at the club, she has been charged with 14 offenses of ‘misconduct of a controlled substance’ which could carry a possible tariff of more than half a century.

Police claim they were able to make several undercover purchases at the club, and although the former reporter was not directly involved, it is registered in her name.

Greene, whose legal name is Charlene Egbe, has pleaded not guilty to the charges and although experts suggest it is unlikely she’ll face decades in prison she said she struggles not to worry.

Speaking to the Guardian about her upcoming trial, the 28-year-old called it a ‘modern day lynching’.

She added: ‘It’s almost dizzying when you try to make sense of it. It could literally cost me the rest of my adult life.’
